The following establishes the general eligibility requirements for the family or relatives of a deceased to qualify for a free burial niche and internment services:
The deceased and immediate family must have little income that makes them financially incapable of purchasing a burial niche and or services. Limited income means that the family’s overall income is within the poverty income guideline as set forth by the Federal government.
2010 Poverty Income Thresholds, Selected Family Types
Single Individual, who is under 65 years of age, with a verifiable annual income not to exceed $ 11,344 or less;
65 years & older with a verifiable annual income not to exceed $ 10,458;
Single Parent with one or more children with a verifiable annual income not to exceed $ 15,030, or who was enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Welfare program.
A deceased or his/her family who is on the welfare role registered with the state welfare agency for the past three months prior to death.
A deceased or his/her family who is known to have continuously received financial assistance from the parish. The parish must validate that the deceased had a continuous record of obtaining financial assistance for life’s essentials, such as housing, food and utilities.
A deceased who has no known family to purchase a niche to bury him/her, as identified by both the Foundation, a recognized charitable organization, or a parish. The deceased must not own a bank account of $ 1,000 or more, real estate or any property worth $ 1,000 or more.
STMF has the right to grant or not to grant the “Free Burial Niche”
